Description
Masks of Guatemala.
Traditionally these masks were used by indigenous groups for celebrations, ceremonies, pageants, or conquests.
Masks were often buried with the dead. Some of the historical specifics may have been lost with time but these masks had a transformational function and meaning in the pre-Hispanic past.
Today these colorful, painted masks are mass produced and reproductions can be found for sale in markets, and souvenir shops throughout Guatemala.
