If there is one place in New Zealand to truly experience the power and wonder of waterfalls, it is Milford Sound. There are only two permanent waterfalls but on rainy day the steep mountain faces are covered in hundreds of temporary waterfalls, which seem to drop down from the clouds. The sound is 265 meters deep and holds mainly salt water but due to the enormous amount of annual rainfall the top ten meters is fresh water from the myriad of waterfalls and rivers that empty into the sound. The sound is most beautiful in the rain, often described as ethereal or otherworldly.
