In 1898 a Nile River Island was given to a prominent British military figure. The island was named after him, Kitchener Island. He set out to import exotic plants and seeds and later in the 1920s the Ministry of Irrigation continued to import a huge variety of plants and trees..The government also started a research station and continues to maintain the gardens.The island remains a tranquil, exotic place to visit and appreciate the importance and beauty of stunning plant life.
