Description
Chiloe Island is the largest island in archipelago of the same name off the west coast of Chile. The Island is quaint, with rolling hills, and pastoral landscapes ,but the action is on the water. Fishing is the livelihood here, and the second biggest industry in all of Chile( mining is first). Historican Renato Carenas, describes Chiloe as "a distinctive enclave linked more to the sea than the continent. A fragile society with a strong sense of solidarity and a deep territorial attachment". Indeed ,Chiloe has a long, rich history with the first human inhabitant arrival more than 7000 years ago..
Today, Quellon and other port towns boast streets with colorful wooden homes and churches, many declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. There is music, street art and sculpture, markets and handicrafts that distinguish the life and history here. Tourism has crept in with the beautiful landscape and parks for hiking, boating and kayaking to endless inlets and bays, marine life..whalewatching, penguin colonies. Destination Chiloe Island, Chile....put it on your bucket list!!
